Shortly after returning from a trip to Iceland on July 11 2019, we noticed that a robin was building a nest in the crook of a support beam near the sliding door to our upper deck. After a few days, the robins left. I considered destroying the nest because I thought it was abandoned but didn't and soon the nest was occupied.
When the robin was away, I took a picture of the nest contents. When I saw three eggs, I decided I would mount a little computer with camera and record the process. Below is a summary of the timeline for the robin's bring a new generation of robins into the world.
June 25 - First picture indicating this is a functioning nursery.
June 26 - Fourth and final egg.
July 7 - First hatchling.
July 8 - Second hatchling.
July 9 - All eggs hatched.
July 12 - Feathers?
July 15 - First observation of chicks eye open.
July 16 - Definitely feathers.
July 17 - What robin children look like to mom.
July 18 - Recorded fecal sac processing.
July 21 - Vigorous wing flapping.
July 22 - First chick leaves nest.
July 23 - All three leave nest. I am convinced that my trying to continue to take short movies of the nest caused all of the chicks to leave the nest at the same time. Some of the chicks should have remained in the nest a little longer to develop more strength and skill but once they were out, they were not coming back.
July 24 - Empty nest.
July 25 - After cleanup.
